Superb Moraa lights up final day of Nairobi meet as fan gifts her priceless largesse

Reigning 800m world champion Mary Moraa stamped her authority in the final of the third Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field meet staged on Sunday January 27, 2024 in Nairobi. 

Moraa, who was one of the few star athletes who competed in the final day of the event held at the Nyayo National Stadium, triumphed in the 400m race. 

She switched on the gears at the final stages of the hotly contested race and went on to win it in a time of 51:97seconds.

She was closely followed by Millicent Ndoro and Damaris Mutunga who finished the race in 52:74s and 53:41s respectively.

Speaking after the brilliant performance, Moraa promised her fans to expect something big in the near future.

"In the final today, I have confirmed 51 seconds, so I am going back to training to improve my speed. So, maybe next time you are going to get a big surprise," stated the runner also known as Kisii Express.

When asked whether she is going to double at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Moraa stated that her coach is the one who is going to make that huge decision.

The one-time Diamond League winner was given a beautiful self-portrait from one of her loyal fans who goes by the name Kelvin Apero.

She thanked Apero and revealed that no one has ever done something special like that to her before. 

“I am very happy to see this portrait. I have never received something like this before. It is a big surprise for me," stated a delighted Moraa.

Elsewhere, fast-rising sprinter Esther Mbagari destroyed the field to win the women’s 100m race while Hesborn Ochieng Oduor was victorious in the men’s category.

Mbagari crossed the finishing line in 11:60 ahead of her fellow Prisons runner Doreen Waka and Monica Safania from the National Police Service. Waka and Safania clocked 11:99 and 12:02 respectively.

As for Oduor, who also comes from Prisons, he ran 10:34 to narrowly edge out Ferdinand Omanyala’s younger brother Isaac Omurwa and Tyson Juma. 

Although they both clocked 10:36, Juma settled for a second-place position while Omurwa finished third.

Finally, in the men’s 10000m race, Nyahururu-based Stanley Njihia Kamau clocked 28:50.2 to emerge victorious ahead of Joseph Kimeli Kimutai (29:11.6) and 2024 Valencia Marathon runner up Alexander Mutiso Munyao (29:13.6).
