Real Madrid came back from a goal down to beat Almeria 2-1 in their La Liga opener on Sunday to get their title defense off to a perfect start.

David Alaba stole the headlines as he came off the bench and scored with his first touch of the ball with a magnificent free-kick that turned out to be the winner.

It was not an easy victory for Carlo Ancelotti's side who found themselves a goal down after six minutes when Largie Ramazani found space in the box to score past Thibaut Courtouis.

The visitors piled on the pressure throughout the first half and despite 8 shots on target at the break, they failed to find an equalizer.

Hope was restored on the hour mark as Lucas Vazquez latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area to put the ball in the back of the net and give the champions a fighting chance.

It was not until the 75th minute when Alaba came on in place of Ferland Mendy, he stepped up to take the free-kick and hit it perfectly into the right hand corner of the goal.

The win leaves them in third place on the embryonic La Liga table, behind Villarreal and Osasuna who were winners earlier in the weekend.

Villarreal hammered Real Valladolid 3-0 whilst Osasuna stunned Sevilla 2-1 on Friday as the Spanish top flight kicked off.

Eden Hazard got a half hour in replacing new signing Aurelien Tchouameni, much to the delight of the traveling fans in the away stand.

Madrid will play Celta Vigo next Saturday in their second consecutive away match.
