The inaugural leg of the 2024 SportPesa 7s Circuit concluded
with Kabras Sugar RFC triumphantly being crowned winners of the 57th edition of
the Christie 7s tournament staged at the RFUEA Grounds from 27 to 28 August.
Pitted against hosts Kenya Harlequins in the main cup final,
the Western-based side showed immense character in recording a 17-12 win against
a largely partisan crowd that unsuccessfully willed on Quins to try and get over the
line.
Kabras got off to a good start and took control of early
proceedings when Patrick Lumumba and Griffin Chao’s converted attempt gave them
a 12-0 lead in the first half.

The hosts however quickly wiped off that lead when when Kenyan
international Amon Wamalwa showed why he bagged the 2022 National Sevens
Circuit top points scorer and top try scorer awards after unleashing a clean
pair of heels from inside his half before touching down to reduce the deficit
to 12-5.
The highly rated youngster then drew his side level after
finding space in a congested midfield to bring the game back into life.
However, Quins could not just manage to ride on the momentum as William
Muhanji’s clever offload to Eric Cantona drove a dagger right to the Quins
players as it proved to be the match-winning moment that delivered a third
Christie 7s title to the sugarmen.
With the win, Kabras walked away with 100,000 from tournament sponsors
SportPesa as Quins grabbed 50,000.
Catholic Monks, who beat Strathmore Leos 10-5 in the 3/4th
place playoff, won 25,000 for their efforts.
