SUMMARY
  • Ronney Onyango scored the winning goal in the 89th minute.
  • The goal came after Shabana were reduced to ten men with eleven minutes to go.
  • The result saw Gor Mahia go joint-top of the table alongside Posta Rangers on 19 points.

Newly acquired Gor Mahia signing Ronney Onyango got the opportune moment to announce himself to the K'Ogalo faithful as he scored the match winning goal that steered his team to the summit of the log, albeit jointly, following a narrow 0-1 victory over a spirited Shabana.

In the Wednesday midweek match that looked destined for a barren stalemate at the Kasarani Main stadium, the right back pulled the rabbit out of the hole when his rasping low shot fizzed past Erick Ongiri and into the back of the net in the 89th minute to help K'Ogalo claim all the three points as well as the bragging rights in the brewing rivalry between the two community clubs.

The clash missed clear cut chances but when the moment came, the former Wazito defender, who was thrusted back into the starting lineup after being rotated in the 0-0 draw against Bidco United over the weekend, stepped up and delivered the crucial goal that decided the tie.

“I am really pleased with the result today. The game was largely as we expected it to be because Shabana are really well drilled out of possession in their pressing, covering and counter-attacking game.

They had a bad day over the weekend but we knew that it would be one of those frustrating afternoons. These are tough games but we are really pleased with how we managed to get the job done today,” Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry noted after the clash.

In a game that had few clear-cut chances, Gor Mahia managed to make the man advantage count after Shabana had been reduced to ten men in the 79th minute following a red card shown to Abisolom Aduda.

“Our boys did their best today because tactically we managed to nullify Gor Mahia’s threat. It is only after the red card that they managed to score. Credit to my boys for the display they showed until the moment we were reduced to ten men,” Shabana head coach Sammy Okoth said.

Elsewhere, Murang'a Seal continued with their brilliant start to the top-flight as they jumped upto third on the log following a 2-1 victory against 10-man Nairobi City Stars.

A brace from Titus Kapchanga ensured that Robin Asenwa's goal was only a consolation for City Stars.

There were also wins for Bidco United, Sofapaka, Bandari and Ulinzi Stars in the clashes played.
