Spain recorded the biggest win of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup thus far with a groundbreaking 7-0 demolition of Costa Rica at the Al Thumama Stadium on Wednesday.

The win was also their biggest ever win at the World Cup, eclipsing a 6-1 victory against Bulgaria at the 1998 tournament.

Dani Olmo got the ball rolling with a goal in the 11th minute before Marcos Asensio got in on the action ten minutes later to give the Spanish a comfortable lead.

Luis Enrique's side were far from finished and went 3-0 up on the half hour mark as Ferran Torres scored from the penalty spot to put the game beyond their opponents.

Costa Rica failed to get even one shot in the entire game, with the last team unable to do that was still them at the 1990 tournament against Brazil.

The second half began just as the first ended with Spain dominating possession and were rewarded nine minutes after the restart as Torres scored to complete his brace.

Enrique turned to his bench and made a few changes with veteran forward Alvaro Morata, Carlos Soler and the experienced Koke coming on to join the fray.

Morata got straight into the action and played well until the 74th minute when he found Gavi with an inch perfect start and the teenager scored with an absolute beauty of a finish.

Gavi, who was already Spain's youngest ever goal scorer, became the third youngest player to ever score in a World Cup after Mexico's Manuel Rosas and the legendary Pele.

The other substitute Soler scored in the 90th minute before Morata put the icing on the cake two minutes into stoppage time with a well taken effort slotted past Keylor Navas.

The 2010 World Cup winners will be full of confidence after that statement win and will take on Germany on Sunday, a must win for Hansi Flick's side who were stunned by Japan earlier in the day.

Costa Rica will face Japan on Sunday, knowing that another defeat might as well mark their early exit from the tournament.
