South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns release experienced Kenyan defender

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns has officially announced that Kenyan international Brian Mandela is among the quartet that has been released by the club after the conclusion of the 23/24 league campaign.

In an official communique posted on its social media platforms on 1 July 2024, the 17-time South African champions announced Mandela will depart alongside the midfield duo of Bongani Zungu, Uruguayan international Gaston Sirino and forward Thabiso Kutumela.

“Thank you to our departing players, the Yellow Nation thanks you for your effort and hard work over the years,” Sundowns posted with a collage of the four players.

Mandela’s departure, who joined the team in the 20/21 season, marks the end of an era that saw the Harambee Stars defender enjoy four successful seasons at Chloorkop.

Under Mokwena’s stewardship, Mandela contributed to the club securing four consecutive DStv Premiership titles, a testament to his impact on the field.

Despite his earlier success, the 29-year-old defender found himself relegated to a lesser and lesser role in the 2023/24 season where he only managed three matches.
