Safari 7s: Shujaa storm main cup semis after flawless group stage campaign

The national 7s team will now face the team that finishes second in Pool B in the semis.

The men’s national rugby 7s side Shujaa, are in line to defend their Safari 7s title after advancing to the main cup semifinals of the 2023 edition following a flawless group stage campaign that saw them win all their four matches.

Having seen off challenge from South Africa All Stars, perennial rivals Uganda and Tropic 7s on day one, the Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua coached side shaked off some early rusty signs as they beat Red Wailers in their last group match on Sunday to make the last four as Pool A winners.

A determined Wailers consisting of some of the best rugby players in the country like Andrew Matoka, Matoka, Beldad Ogeta and Chrispin Shitundo managed to cause some stress to the national team but captain Vincent Onyala manage to break clear on the right for Shujaa’s opener.

That try appeared to open the floodgates as Tony Omondi and Kevin Wekesa added two other tries in quick succession to take Kenya’s lead to 17-0 following one successful conversion.

Wailers managed to breach Shujaa’s defence in the second half but Onyala quickly restored Shujaa’s lead with his second of the match.

Substitutes Brian Mutugi and Festus Shiasi then ensured Kenya finished the game on a high with a 34-7 victory.

In the semis, Shujaa will now face the team that finishes second in Pool B.
