28-year-old
Ronny Lusigi was on Wednesday voted in as the new Esports Federation of Kenya President.
This is
after the IndexG Esports Chief Executive Officer garnered a landslide 23 votes
to claim the coveted position after defeating Mwaniki Mwanzia who only managed
four votes in the contest.
Speaking
after marching to the emphatic victory, Lusigi, while expressing his gratitude
to the delegates who voted them in, vowed to put games at the heart and centre
of the federation’s activities during his reign.
“We thank
everyone for competing in a dignified manner and we are grateful as a team to the
delegates who have believed in us. We shall put our best foot forward in taking
this sport to greater heights.
I would
like to give a lot of credit to our founding chairman and secretary general who
in 2018 initiated this. Without them, I could not be here,” he said.
“We shall
sit together as a team and come up with the way forward for the federation. We
have our two founding members and also a new crop coming up but our focus is to
put the gamers at the centre of everything we do,” he noted shortly after being
declared the winner at the Ngong Hills hotel in Nairobi.
Following
the election, Lusigi takes over from John Shimaka in what was the first
elections for the federation since its formation in May 2018.
In other
positions, Ann Odhiambo claimed the 2nd Vice President position
after getting 22 votes against Celine Leroshion’s five votes. John Odhiambo got
the 1st Vice President seat unopposed.
Hellen
Kairu was voted in as the new Treasurer after getting 20 votes to edge Lydia
Bisereri (7) while Brian Ochanda went in as the athlete representative.
Current
Secretary General Omar Sadique Mohammed retained his seat unopposed.
The first
task for the newly elected office will be preparing a team that will represent
the country in the global Esports Championship set to take place in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia in December.
