Philimon Kipchumba breaks 8-year record in Shanghai marathon win

Kipchumba broke the course record set by fellow countryman Paul Lonyangata eight years ago.

Philimon Kipchumba Kiptoo entered his name into record books
at the 2023 Shanghai Marathon, a World Athletics Platinum Label Road Race on
Sunday, November 26.
The 25-year-old obliterated the field to clinch the title in
a hotly contested race that saw four runners run under 2:06.00 for the first
time in the history of the event.
Kiptoo reached the tape in 2:03.35 and in the process broke
the course record of 2:07.24 set by fellow countryman Paul Lonyangata eight
years ago.

Reacting after the race, the athlete who won the Standard
Chartered Hong Kong Marathon earlier this year credited the conducive weather
for the exemplary performance.
"This is my first visit to Shanghai. The course is
beautiful and the weather is just perfect, helping me to creating a new record,”
he was quoted by Shanghai Daily.
Kiptoo is expected to pocket a whopping $55,000( KSH
8,399,772) for winning this year’s title plus an additional $20,000 (KSH
3,054,462) for setting a new mark. In total he will return home with $ 75,000
(approximately Ksh 11, 454,235) with the money expected to be taxed.

Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu settled for a second-place finish
ahead of the Kenyan duo of Solomon Yego and Kenneth Keter. Simbu crossed the
finishing line in 2:05.39 while Yego and Keter timed 2:05.42 and 2:05.53
respectively.
Other Kenyans who secured a top ten position in the race
include Enock Onchari (5th in 2:07.47) and Nicholas Kirwa (10th in 2:11.16).
Ethiopia triumphed in the women’s category, with the 2022
Lagos City champion Siranesh Dagne winning the race in an impressive time of
2:21.28.

Kenya’s Selly Chepyego clocked 2:21.55 to finish second
ahead of Eunice Chumba who switched her allegiance from Kenya to Qatar.
2023 World Cross Country champion Beatrice Chebet’s elder
sister Sandrafelis Tuei came in fourth in a time of 2:22.22. She was closely
followed by compatriot Emily Arusio.
