Paul Were vows to lift boyhood club back to the big circle after returning to Mathare United

Mathare got relegated last season after finishing in second last position.

- Were is a Kenyan international who has played for Tusker and AFC Leopards locally as well as a host of other teams in South Africa, Rwanda and Greece.

Mathare United regain its place in the top tier Football Kenya Federation Premier
League after completing his switch to the Slum Boys on Thursday morning.
The experienced player was among the four new signings to be
unveiled by the 2008 Kenya Premier League champions, marking his return to the
club after fourteen years.
“Mathare United has today confirmed the signing of four players who will be part of the current squad for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

The four are; Paul Were, Gideon Ogweno, Starlon Odhiambo, and Hilary Kiprotich. These latest acquisitions make it 11 signings for us during this mid-season window,” Mathare announced.
“Were is a Kenyan international who has played for Tusker and AFC Leopards locally as well as a host of other teams in Africa and Europe.

Speaking shortly after his unveiling, Were, who started his
career at Mathare Youth before a career that saw him play for Tusker and AFC
Leopards locally before stints in South Africa, Rwanda and Greece, revealed his target after signing on the
dotted line.
“It feels good to rejoin Mathare after more than ten years.
I aim to score as much as I can and play any other role on the pitch that will
enable the team to secure promotion,” he said.
“I was expecting a move back to Europe but things didn’t work out. Mathare approached me and asked me to help the team secure promotion. I felt it was a good move for me to play rather than being a free agent,” he stated.

Mathare were relegated last season after finishing second from bottom in the top tier but appear to be on course for promotion as the Leonard Odipo-coached side is ranked second behind Naivas after eighteen matches played.
Naivas are leading the log on 42 points with Mathare next on 40 points.
