SUMMARY
  • The win improved Gor Mahia’s tally to 63 points.
  • K’Ogalo only need two more wins to be declared the 2023/2024 FKFPL champions.
  • The defeat left Shabana facing the risk of getting relegated from the topflight league.

With only five matches remaining to the end of the 2023/2024 Football Kenya Federation Premier League season, record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia moved closer to a 21st title after beating Shabana 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu.

Harambee Stars forward Benson Omala played an influential role as his solitary first strike ensured that K’Ogalo got the three crucial points, needing only two more wins to win the title.

The first-half goal ensured the 22-year-old who had earlier missed a penalty redeemed himself as K’Ogalo completed the double over the relegation-threatened Shabana.

Gor were the better side for the majority of the encounter, with the likes of Austin Odhiambo and Bryson Wangai causing constant problems on the Shabana backline.

Odhiambo could have increased Gor Mahia’s advantage in the second half when he unleashed a shot but Tore Bore’s shot-stopper Francis Odhiambo made a brilliant save to deny him.

On the other hand, Shabana missed a golden chance to equalize in the 70th minute. Bryan Michira fired a shot from close range, forcing Caleb Otieno to produce an excellent save.

Gor Mahia managed to hold on to their slim lead and picked up an important victory, which increased their tally at the summit of the table to 63 points.
