The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) disciplinary committee has slapped former Maseno High School student Alvin Nyakeri with a three-week suspension.

Nyakeri, who currently plays for Nairobi-based side AP Warriors, was suspended after being found guilty of assaulting a Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) Sparxx player Walter Omwangu during a recent match held at the institution’s grounds.

“The judicial officer categorized the red card as a low-end on the scale of seriousness and having considered aggravating and mitigating circumstances imposed upon the player a three (3) week/match suspension.

“In accordance with R.17.19.10 and in line with the player’s schedule, he will see suspension from 14 January,” part of the press release issued by KRU read.

According to the report filed by Michael Aloo, who officiated the nationwide game, a scuffle developed between Nyakeri and Omwangu.

Aloo noted that when Omwangu went to get the ball from Nyakeri, the latter punched him in the face.

“Following the referee blowing the whistle for an infringement, player No.12 (Walter Omwangu - as per match sheet) of KCA University went to retrieve the ball from player No. 8, Alvin Nyakeri of AP Warriors.

A scuffle developed and player No. 8, punched player No. 12,” a section of the report from Aloo read.

The referee added that Omwangu was the one who provoked Nyakeri by holding onto the playing ball.

Nyakeri was represented by the AP Warriors duo of assistant manager Brian Murimi and head coach Fred Hamisi during the hearing which was chaired by Aggrey Chabeda.

Hamisi told the committee that Nyakeri did not throw any punch and the centre referee unfairly issued a red card to his player since he was not in a position to see what caused the fight.

On the other hand, Murimi seconded Hamisi’s claims, arguing that Aloo erred in his decision to show Nyakeri a red card.

However, the panel did not find any credible evidence to show that the accused did not commit the crime and the referee blundered and thus made the decision to suspend Nyakeri.
