Manchester United's terrible start to the 2022/23 English Premier League season continued as they suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brentford on Sunday.

The Bees put on a scintillating first half performance that saw them take a 4-0 lead by the 34th minute, giving new boss Erik Ten Hag a literal baptism of fire.

The defeat is United's seventh in a row on the road - their worst run since 1936 - while it is the seventh time they have conceded at least four goals in a league game since the start of last season.

Josh Dasilva put the hosts in the lead after a strike that mysteriously crept past David De Gea before Mathias Jensen doubled their advantage.

New signing Ben Mee and forward Bryan Mbeumo then scored in quick succession to all but gift Brentford the historic win in front of their home fans.

Following the opening day defeat to Brighton and this embarrassing loss, it means that Man United are at the bottom of the league table for the first time in 30 years.

Erik ten Hag faces the unenviable task of lifting his players in time for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford on Monday, 22 August.

"We all have seen the game. I think Brentford were more hungry and we conceded goals to individual mistakes. You can have a good plan but that puts the plan in the bin," the former Ajax boss stated after the game.

United have now conceded four goals or more seven times in the Premier League since the start of last season.
