Kenyan runner Charles Kipsang dies in Mount Cameroon Race

Kenyans and athletics fans around the world have been
shocked by the untimely death of mountain runner Charles Kipsang which occurred
on Saturday night, 24 February 2024.
Kipsang reportedly died due to a heart attack after completing
the 2024 Mount Cameroon Race of Hope.
According to a Cameroonian media outlet MimiMefoinfos.com,
Kipsang collapsed after finishing the race.
“Kenyan athlete Charles Kipsang Kipkorir has died after completing the 29th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, taking the 16th position in the senior men category.

Kipkorir, 32, collapsed several minutes after crossing the
finish line at the Molyko Stadium and efforts by the medical team to revive him
proved futile,” a section of the article read.
Okalia Bilai, who serves as the Governor of the South West
region of Cameroon, confirmed the sad incident.
“When the minister and I had left the stadium, some 30
minutes after, we were informed that when he was going to collect his own
prize, he fell down and collapsed. They carried him to the hospital but he had
already passed away,” commented Bilai.
Kipsang was among several Kenyan athletes who took part in
the race, with this year’s edition being his fourth appearance.

Kiptum reflects
It is reported that his body has been taken to the Buea
Mortuary as it awaits transportation to his motherland.
Kipsang's death comes days after Kenya lost two of its
athletics legends in the reigning marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum
and Henry Rono.
Kiptum perished alongside his coach on Sunday, February 11 after being involved in a road accident when they were heading to Kaptagat from Eldoret.

The duo were buried earlier this week in Naiberi and Rwanda
respectively.
On the other hand, Rono, died at the age of 72 while
undergoing medications at a Nairobi-based medical facility.
Rono, who broke four world records (5000m, 10000m, 3000m steeplechase and 3000m) in less than three months several decades ago will be laid to rest on Wednesday 28 February.
