The Kenya rugby legends once again proved too good for their counterparts from Uganda as they recorded a 15-25 win against the East African rivals to claim the bragging rights in the first leg of their match staged at the Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere, Uganda.

Tries from captain Eddie Omondi, Vincent Mose and the evergreen Collins Injera, coupled with Lavin Asego’s steady boot ensured that the Kenyan legends completed a third straight win over the Ugandans since the two sides started playing in 2023.

While Uganda came out of the blocks quickly in the second edition of the two-legged affair, Asego, who had a man-of-the-match performance as he closed the day with ten points, was the one who gave Kenya the lead when he drilled in a penalty early on.

His effort was cancelled by a Ugandan penalty that restored parity but it was not long before a determined Omondi bulldozed his way over Uganda’s try line at the corner for the first touchdown.

Asego stepped for the conversion, and without breaking a sweat, split the posts from way out in the corner, much to the amazement of the onlooking fans who got a taste of why he is referred as Kenya’s deadliest flyhalf.

After the half time break, he then extended Kenya’s lead to 3-13 with another penalty conversion before Uganda finally gave their home fans some reason to cheer with their first try around the hour mark, cutting the deficit to 8-13 following a missed conversion.

Two moments of brilliance then ensured that the game was only going one way by the referee’s full-time whistle.

First, it was Mose who picked the ball on the halfway line before spotting a gap which he fully exploited as he evaded over four of his markers to put the game out of the danger zone at 8-18 as Asego missed for the first time.

Injera then rolled back the years as he beat the last man remaining for pace before touching down under the posts to make Asego’s conversion duties much easier.

Uganda got another try but it was the kicks of a dying horse as that effort proved to be the last action of the game, Kenya winning 15-25 in the end.

The return leg will take place in September this year.
