Kenya trounced a strong Rwandan side 1-0 in a thrilling CECAFA under 18 Championships Group A encounter on Monday, November 28, 2023 to confirm their spot in the semifinals of the regional competition.

Junior Stars started the match which was staged at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Kisumu on a high, putting constant pressure on their opponents.

In the 14th minute, gifted midfielder Tyron Kariuki came close to giving Kenya the lead but his powerful header bounced off a Rwandan defender and was cleared to safety.

Their efforts finally bore fruit in the 37th minute when Adrine Kibet showed why he is rated highly by most Kenyan football fans, unleashing a powerful strike into the bottom left corner of the net to put Junior Stars ahead after being assisted by Kariobangi Sharks ace Stanley Wilson.

Junior Stars’ win guaranteed them a place in the semi-finals after back-to-back wins while Rwanda will have to wait to confirm their place in the next round.

Rwanda, who edged past Somalia with a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon, occupy the second position on the log. Somalia are third while Sudan sit at the bottom having received a thorough 5-0 beating at the hands of Kenya in their first match.

Neighbors Sudan and Somalia are scheduled to face off in the next Group A match later today. The match is expected to kick off at 2 pm at the same venue.

Unlike the first match which was played in rainy conditions, the weather was perfect making it possible for thousands of fans to attend.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President Dorcas Petra, Harambee Stars manager Engin Firat and assistant Ken Odhiambo were among the dignitaries who graced the game.
