Kenya Ranked Best African Side After Budapest World Championship

The country was ranked fifth overall out of the 195 countries that took part in the event.

SUMMARY

Kenya bagged a total of ten medals - 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze.

The ten medals saw Kenya regain top spot in the continent after losing out to Ethiopia last year in the 2022 edition held in Eugene, Oregon in the United States of America.

United States of America once again ruled the track and field competition after scooping 29 medals.

Kenya has been ranked as the top African side and the fifth overall out of the 46 nations that medalled at the just concluded World Athletics Championship 2023 held in Budapest, Hungary from 19-27 August.

Having bagged three gold, three silver and four bronze medals in the 22nd edition of the global championship, the tally of ten helped Kenya to finish ahead of closest challengers Ethiopia, Uganda and Morocco.

Two of the gold medals came from Faith Kipyegon who won the women 1500m and 5000m races to go down into the history books as the first woman to achieve the 1500-5000m double in a World Championship event.

The other gold came from fast rising two lap specialist Mary Moraa who held off attacks from Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu to claim her first global gold in the women’s 800m on the final day.

Daniel Simiu, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Beatrice Chepkoech returned the three silver medals courtesy of their second-place finishes in the 10000m, 800m and the 3000m steeplechase races respectively.

Beatrice Chebet, Faith Cherotich, Jacob Krop and Abraham Kibiwott won bronze medals after finishing third in the 5000m,3000m steeplechase, 5000m and 3000m Steeplechase respectively.

The ten medals saw Kenya regain top spot in the continent after losing out to Ethiopia last year in the 2022 edition held in Eugene, Oregon in the United States of America.

United States of America once again ruled the track and field competition after scooping 29 medals (12 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze).

This was 23 medals ahead of second placed Canada who had four gold and two silver medals.

Spain came in third on 4 gold and one bronze, Jamaica fourth with three gold, five silver and four bronze medals as Kenya rounded off the top five.
