Kasarani Stadium closed down for renovations works ahead of 2027 AFCON

Officials say the renovation works will take around one year to complete.
- The refurbishment works will touch on the changing rooms, canopy, terraces, media centers, washrooms, and lighting.
- The drainage systems are also expected to be repaired and coded seats introduced in preparation for the upcoming 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
- Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were selected as hosts for the 2027 AFCON.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports
has announced that the refurbishment work at Kenya’s biggest Stadium, the Moi
International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani, is expected to be completed within
12 months.
This is according to the ministry’s principal secretary
Peter Tum who was speaking during the closing down of the stadium for renovation
works ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations that will be jointly hosted by
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
“It is expected that this contract will last for only twelve months beginning today. Therefore, it is expected that they would have finished the refurbishment within that period of time,” he stated.

Tum, who graced the commissioning ceremony, which was
attended by among others his boss Ababu Namwamba, added that they are looking
for several issues including quality and speed.
On his part, the Cabinet Secretary disclosed that the
contract has been awarded to a Chinese-based firm who will make sure the
facility meets international standards.
“This Stadium is almost 40 years old. It has been around for a while. It has not undergone major rehabilitation for a long time and when the confederation of African football or CAF inspection team visited, we agreed on a number of interventions.

A number of improvements that will upgrade this stadium to a
level where it can meet the required international standards. I am pleased to
announce that the contractor is ready and they will be undertaking a major
overhaul of this stadium,” commented Ababu.
He assured Kenyans that they will get value for their hard-earned
money since the project will be undertaken on the pillars of efficiency,
cost-effectiveness, timeliness and transparency.
Namwamba ended by announcing that the stadium is out of bounce and whoever disobeys the policy will face the full force of the law.

His sentiments were echoed by the principal secretary in the Ministry of Defense Patrick Mariru who said that they are going to seal off the facility.
