KPA makes history in Africa Women’s Basketball League in Egypt

The team grabbed silver in the continental basketball tournament.
- KPA became the first Kenyan side to achieve that incredible feat in a tournament which was won by the hosts and defending champions Sport Club Alexandria.
- The Dockers suffered a painful 103-59 defeat in the one-sided final to return home with a silver medal.
- Another Kenyan side Equity Hawks settled for a sixth-place position in an event which was graced by a total of 10 clubs.
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball club made
history on Tuesday night, December 19, 2023 by finishing second at the African
Women’s Basketball League (AWBL) held in Egypt.
KPA became the first Kenyan side to achieve that incredible
feat in a tournament which was won by the hosts and defending champions Sport
Club Alexandria.
The Dockers suffered a painful 103-59 defeat in the one-sided final to return home with a silver medal.

Sporting Club’s captain Hagar Amer made the most
contributions in the final scoring 32 points to guide her side to the title.
Her teammate Cierra Dillard scored 17 points with KPA’s duo of Aminata
Samassekou and Reynolds bagging 16 and 12 points respectively.
This is a massive improvement for Athony Ojukwu’s charges,
who managed a fifth-place finish last season.
The organizations’ men’s football club which takes part in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL), Bandari United sent a congratulatory message to the ladies.

“KPA Basketball team makes history with a silver win, second
best team in the continent! Congratulations ladies,” read part of the statement
from the club’s official social media platform.
KPA had proceeded to the final after narrowly edging out
Rwanda Energy Group (REG) 101 - 97 in a game which they started as underdogs.
Sporting Club on the other hand dismantled Inter Club of Angola by 100 to 74
scores to book their ticket to the final.
Prior to the final, KPA and Sporting club had also met at the group stage whereby the latter topped their pool with eight points with the Kenyan queens finishing second a point behind.

Another Kenyan side Equity Hawks settled for a sixth-place
position in an event which was graced by a total of 10 clubs.
Hawks, who met with KPA at the quarter final stage were
thrashed by Nigeria Customs in their last game.
Medina Okot, who recently helped the national 3x3 basketball team win the African Cup title, and Victoria Reynolds were named among the tournament’s best five players.
