Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has announced that the country’s national broadcaster KBC will air games in the 2023/2024 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) campaign.

Namwamba made the revelations on Tuesday, October 24, after paying a courtesy call to KBC’s legendary presenter Leonard Mambo Mbotela during a visit to his home where he also announced that some of the Premier League games will also be available on radio.

“I am happy to announce that the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) is returning to KBC TV and radio on free to air live broadcasts,” the Cabinet Secretary divulged.

Regarding his visit to Mbotela, Namwamba described him as an icon in the Kenyan broadcasting industry as he awarded the veteran journalist Kshs. 1 million in recognition of his contribution to the nation through broadcasting.

“Legends are forever. What a special blessing to visit and drink from the fountain of wisdom of this incredible national hero of all time, the ever-green, irrepressible colossus Leonard Mambo Mbotela, he of the peerless "Je, huu ni ungwana" fame.

Support for Mbotela is a special salute to him and all our broadcasting greats who have left such an indelible mark on the rich tapestry of our nation. Live long Shujaa!” Namwamba stated.

Ababu, who has his roots in Uganda, further expressed his intentions to enhance the level of football in the country.

“We have walked down memory lane to the dizzying times when football radio broadcasts were magical, when Kenyans thronged stadia to cheer their favorite teams, turning every match into a stirring carnival atmosphere.

“I am even more determined to take Kenyan football and the rest of our sports to heights never witnessed before,” he commented.

The CS ended by requesting Kenyans to find time to attend football matches in the stadiums spread across the country.

Ababu has played a crucial role to help develop football since replacing Ambassador Amina Mohammed.

He was instrumental in helping the country win the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosting rights alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

In addition, Namwamba was also influential in the world football governing body’s decision to lift a ban on Kenya earlier this year.
