SUMMARY
  • Gor Mahia, who have not managed a win in their last two games, top the standings on 44 points.
  • City Stars are in second place with 37 points.
  • City Stars know that a win could cut down Gor’s lead at the top to just four points and that could be all the motivation they need as they stage a surprise quest for the league title.

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia will once again face a test of character when they take on Nairobi City Stars in a top of the table Football Kenya Federation Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon at the Machakos Stadium.

Gor, who currently sit at the summit of the league standings on 44 points, will be out to get back to winning ways after a two-match winless streak but will have to navigate past a reinvigorated City Stars side that is in second place on 37 points.

After losing their first match of the season in a 3-1 defeat against Kenya Police, K’Ogalo played out to a barren draw against Ulinzi Stars in their next game and the Johnathan McKinstry-coached side is seeking to get a taste of victory once again.

Speaking ahead of the game, McKinstry called on his side to improve on their finishing that let them down in the Ulinzi Stars game despite fashioning the better chances even as he acknowledged the threat that City Stars pose.

“We are expecting a tough game. City Stars have had a good season. They are a young squad and there are some talented players in there. We know they like to play and move the ball around but they also have players who can run in behind you.

If we create chances the way we did in the last game, I expect we can score two or three. The big focus this week has been finishing off attacking chances which has been lacking a bit,” the head coach said.

City Stars know that a win could cut down Gor’s lead at the top to just four points and that could be all the motivation they need as they stage a surprise quest for the league title.

Meanwhile, four other matches will be on the cards in other Saturday matches.

Posta Rangers, who are in third position entertain Ulinzi Stars at the Police Sacco Stadium in the early kick-off before Police take on Shabana later on.

Murang’a Seal, who have not won a game since November 2023 (D4 L7), will be hoping to put an end to their struggles when they host Bidco United at the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a.

In another encounter outside Nairobi, Nzoia Sugar, who snapped their four-match losing streak last weekend, will be hoping to get some consistency when they welcome Bandari to Sudi Stadium.
