20th February 2019
His early strike in last week’s 2-2 home draw with Rotherham United made it 16 for the season
- Jarrod Bowen has set his sights on becoming the first Hull City FC player to reach 20 goals in a single season since Stuart Elliott’s goal-scoring exploits in the Tigers’ 2004/05 promotion-winning campaign

HULL, United Kingdom- Jarrod Bowen has set his sights on becoming the first Hull City FC player
to reach 20 goals in a single season since Stuart Elliott’s goal-scoring
exploits in the Tigers’ 2004/05 promotion-winning campaign.
His early strike in
last week’s 2-2 home draw with Rotherham United made it 16 for the season for
the winger and, having surpassed his impressive goal tally from last season,
the Academy product and with 12 goals in
his last 13 games, Jarrod Bowen is a man on form.
“I think twenty has
got to be my aim now,” he said. “The main thing for me this season was to back
up what I did last year.
“After what I
achieved last season in terms of goals, I wanted to at least match that figure
this year. That was my aim at the start of the season, mainly so that no-one
could throw an accusation of being a one-season wonder at me. I just wanted to
prove and establish myself in the Championship,” Bowen stated.
“At the end of the
day, I’m a goalscorer. Even though I play out wide, I want to score goals.
“Thankfully I’ve
managed to beat what I got last year. I scored 15 in all competitions last
season and my goal against Rotherham was my 16th of this campaign, and there
are still 14 games remaining in the season.

“So that aim for me
now has to be to get to twenty goals. If anyone had offered that number to me
before the start of the season – for a winger – I would have bitten their hand
off,” he added.
“But now, it’s a
realistic target. I’ve just got to knuckle down, keep working hard for the team
and keep trying to score goals.
“It’s not just goals
though. I want more assists for the team as well. I just want to contribute to
the team getting as many points as possible between now and the end of the
season.”
Eagle-eyed Hull City
fans will have noticed Bowen’s strike against the Millers was a rarity in his
collection of goals in black and amber – due to the fact it was scored with his
right foot.
It was the third
time he’d found the back of the net this season with his so-called weaker foot,
which the 22-year-old puts down to his work on the training pitch with
first-team coach Tony Pennock.
“I’ve worked a lot
on my right foot with Tony,” explained Bowen.
“Tony was the first
person I talked to ahead of joining the Club when I was 17 and he’s been there
every step of the way for me since I’ve been here.
“Every game day minus
one, we do a bit of extra work after training has come to an end, working on my
finishing. We do ten finishes – five on my left foot cutting in and five on my
right foot going down the outside.

“Before I came here,
I didn’t use my right foot for anything! But, this year especially, I’ve got
the confidence to go on the outside of players and onto my right foot to get a
shot away.
“Sometimes you do
need to mix your game up because it can’t always be the same move otherwise
people will do their homework on you and lessen your ability to make an impact
on games,” he continued.
“To now have another
side to my game, where I can go on the outside – and don’t get me wrong, it’s
not perfect yet but I’m working on it – is great.
“My goal against
Rotherham showed that the hard work is paying off and I’ll always be prepared
to work harder in order to improve in all areas of my game,” Bowen concluded.
