Gor Mahia's McKinstry to fly out to The Gambia on Sunday after Muhoroni Youth clash
17th May 2024
The Northern Irish tactician is heading to The Gambia where he is set to take charge as the new national team head coach.
- McKinstry will fly out on Sunday after Gor Mahia's game on Sunday against Muhoroni Youth.
- He is expected to oversee The Gambia's two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Seychelles and Gabon.
- He will then return in time for K'Ogalo's game against Sofapaka on 16 June.
Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry will leave the
country on Sunday night after leading his side against Muhoroni Youth in a
title-deciding match that will be played at the SportPesa Arena, SportPesa News
can exclusively confirm.
The Northern Irishman will be heading to The Gambia where he
is set to take charge as the new national team head coach for the Scorpions.
McKinstry, who joined K'Ogalo at the start of the 2022/2023
Football Kenya Federation Premier League, is expected to finalize his agreement
with the Gambia Football Federation before overseeing the country's two 2026
FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Seychelles and Gabon on 8 and 11 June
respectively.

After the two games, the Northern Irishman is expected to
link back with K'Ogalo in time for their third last match of the 23/24 season against
Sofapaka on 16 June.
By the time McKinstry will fly out on Sunday, he could have
already lifted his second title at the club as Gor Mahia need only one more win
to be crowned champions for a record-extending 21st time.
K'Ogalo could also get the title even before playing that match
should Tusker beat Kenya Police at the Police Sacco Stadium on Saturday before
their Sunday game.

McKinstry will be replacing the experienced Tom Saintfiet
who quit minutes after The Gambia's elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of
Nations despite a sterling effort to try and secure a place in the last-16 at
the expense of five-time winners Cameroon.
Back in the tournament held in January, the 50-year-old
Belgian said his contract was running out in August but he would be leaving
immediately.
The Gambia was his 10th job as a national team coach and by
far his most successful.
He qualified the small West African country for their first Cup of Nations in Cameroon in 2021 and then took them on a giant-killing run to the quarterfinals.
