SUMMARY
  • Gor Mahia would have gone top of the table with a win over Police.
  • They now sit in second, one point behind Posta Rangers.
  • Murang'a Seal stunned Tusker 2-1 to cement their spot in third place on the log.

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia missed the chance to go top of the 23/24 Football Kenya Federation Premier League as they were held to a barren stalemate by Kenya Police in a colourless Round 10 match staged at the Kasarani Main Stadium on Sunday evening.

With current table toppers Posta Rangers having been held to a 0-0 draw against KCB, K’Ogalo would have taken over top spot with a win, but their dour display in front of goal saw the 20-time Kenyan champions miss the golden opportunity to jump in the driver’s seat.

“Both teams had times when they were on top of the game and in the final thirty metres we should have done a bit more.

Equally, I thought Police set up with quite a low block in the first half and went direct with the changes they made in the second half but it was quite a good game from both teams who had their chances,” Gor’s Johnathan McKinstry said after the game.

“I think a draw is a fair result for both teams. They dominated some parts of the game but did not score which was the same for us. We just now need to focus on the upcoming games and continue to improve in our upcoming games,” Kenya Police boss Zdravko Logarusic noted.

K’Ogalo had started the game in high spirits, knocking the ball in the middle of the park confidently as Police struggled to get a foothold in the opening quarter of an hour.

The defending champions however failed to make any meaningful attempt on goal despite their possession and it was Police who almost grabbed the lead just before the half time break when Francis Kahata’s attempt on goal was just denied by an alert Kevin Omondi in goal.

The lack of clear-cut chances would continue even in the second half with both sides struggling in the final third.

South Sudan international Tito Okello, who is currently on the books of Police, should have punished his former employers in the 73rd minute when through on goal but the striker blasted his shot wide off target with the clearest chance of the game.

The law administrators tried to rally late on but Gor Mahia stayed resolute to maintain their unbeaten start to the season as they stayed one point behind Rangers in second place.

Elsewhere, Murang’a Seal cemented their place in third on the log after recording a brilliant 2-1 victory to stun twelve-time champions Tusker at the SportPesa Arena.

The Gabriel Kingi coached side had to come from behind as goals from Batts Awita and Titus Kapchanga completed the turnaround. John Byamukama had given Tusker the lead early on.
