Record Kenya
Premier League winners Gor Mahia saw their fortune change as they relaunched a formidable
partnership with leading gaming firm SportPesa.
The titanic
announcement was made on Friday in the presence of the entire Gor Mahia squad
and SportPesa CEO Captain Ronald Karauri.
Gor have
signed a three-year deal that will see SportPesa become their main shirt
sponsor in a deal that is worth KSHs 80 million a season.
In what Gor Mahia termed as ‘coming back
home’ the club said the move was necessitated by the need for a holistic
support beyond financial aspects.
“Today is a
great day for both SportPesa and Gor Mahia as we enter this partnership once
again.
“We have
seen a lot of success in our previous partnership, and I am confident that this
marks the beginning of greater things to come,” Captain Karauri stated.
When
SportPesa first ventured into Kenyan football, Gor Mahia were their first partners,
and this saw many firsts for the beautiful game in the land.
Gor were
two-time SportPesa Super Cup winners, and this allowed them to break barriers
as they played a friendly against English side Hull City in May 2018.
The record KPL
winners lost via a penalty shootout but made history as Hull became the first
English side to play a game on Kenyan soil.
“The things
that SportPesa and Gor have done together has not been achieved by anyone else
in Kenya and this just goes to show how dedicated we remain to development of
sports.
“If your
heart is not in it, it’s very hard to break such barriers. We are looking forward
to helping Gor reach the heights we know they can achieve,” Karauri added.
In November
2018, Gor continued to make history as they became the first Kenyan club to
play on English soil as they lost 4-0 to Everton at Goodison Park.
This was
the second time that the 19-time KPL winners played against Everton after they
lost 2-1 to the Toffees in Dar es Saalam, in a match where Wayne Rooney scored
on his return to his boyhood club.
“I want to
just say a huge thank you to SportPesa for coming back to rescue us with this new
partnership.
“We have
achieved so much as a club courtesy of SportPesa and I can say without a doubt
that this is the best sponsor we have had since the inception of the club in
1968,” Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier stated.
There is loads
of back and forth with the resumption of the top flight in Kenya but Gor
maintain that they are set to give the best account of themselves once the season
kicks off.
“Now that
we are back where we belong with SportPesa, there is no limitation to what we
can do.
“I assure our
fans that Gor is on the way back to the top of Kenyan football,” Captain
Philemon Otieno concluded.
