Faith Cherotich nominated for World Athletics’ Rising Star Award

Kenya’s budding 3000metres steeplechaser Faith Cherotich has
been nominated for the 2023 World Athletics Women’s Rising Star Award.
In the awards which recognize the best performing athletes
under the age of 20, the 19-year-old made the final list alongside Ethiopia’s
Medina Eisa and Serbia’s Angelina Topic.
“World Athletics is delighted to announce the three
finalists for the 2023 Women’s Rising Star Award, which will recognise this
year's best U20 athlete at the World Athletics Awards 2023.

The nominations reflect some of the standout performances
that the sport has witnessed this year, at the World Athletics Championships
Budapest 23, World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 23, World
Athletics Road Running Championships Riga 23, one-day meeting circuits and
other events around the world,” World Athletics posted.
Cherotich landed the nomination after impressing in the 2023 Budapest World Championships where she grabbed her maiden senior world medal after finishing third behind Winfred Yavi (Bahrain) and Beatrice Chepkoech in the 3000m steeplechase.
She also finished in fourth place in the U20 World Cross Country Championships held in Barthust, Australia earlier in the year and is currently second on the world U20 all-time list with 8:59.65.

Serbia’s Topic will stake a claim on the award after setting a national record with a 1.97m high jump and being the European U20 champion.
On her part, Eisa bagged silver in the U20 World Cross
Country Championships and ran a new Personal Best time of 14:16.52 as she finished
in sixth place in the 5000m.
The winner of the 2023 Women’s Rising Star Award will be
selected by an international panel of experts and be announced on World
Athletics’ platforms on 11 December.
