FKFPL Wrap: Gor Mahia pass title-credential test again, Ingwe stun City Stars as Bidco overcome Talanta

The Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) had everything to offer during the weekend.

There were surprises, tears of joy, agony and unexpected results from different venues across the country.

Clubs which have endured difficult periods in the past like AFC Leopards and Ulinzi Stars picked up morale boosting wins as in form sides such as Nairobi City Stars and Tusker faltered while record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia got another big win as they maintained their unbeaten start. 

Moreover, several players bagged braces to help their sides down opponents in the matchday 19 fixtures.

Elsewhere, Murang’a Seal’s winless run continued as they came undone against Posta Rangers while Bernard Mwalala’s KCB, who have been blowing hot and cold this season, were held to a barren draw by Muhoroni Youth.

Gor Mahia humble Robert Matano’s Tusker

League leaders Gor Mahia ended Tusker FC’s five-game winning streak in a hotly contested match staged at the Machakos Stadium. 

K’Ogalo won the end-to-end clash 1-0, a result which drew them closer to defending their FKFPL title.

The goal came courtesy of reliable midfielder Austin Odhiambo’s breath-taking free kick in the 20th minute that flew past Tusker’s human wall before hitting the back of the net.

The win ensured the Jonathan McKinstry coached side opened a 10-point gap at the top of the table while the Brewers dropped to fourth on 31 points. 

Ingwe bag third straight win for the first time this season

The shocking result of the weekend occurred at the Kakamega-based Bukhungu Stadium when AFC Leopards stunned Nairobi City Stars.

Most football fanatics expected the multiple Kenyan Premier League champions to be on the receiving end.

However, Ingwe proved to be no pushovers as they scoried two unanswered goals against Simba wa Nairobi.

AFC Leopards’ goals came in the second half via Maxwell Otieno and substitute Kevin Kimani. The experienced Kimani, who made a cameo as a substitute after Ingwe captain Cliffton Miheso picked up an injury, was named the man of the match for his excellent display. 

The win helped Ingwe climb to position 10 in the FKFPL standings with 24 points while Nairobi City Stars maintained their second position having amassed 33 points so far this season.

Bidco United annihilate FC Talanta in eight-goal thriller 

Finally, Bidco United overcame a determined FC Talanta side in one of the best matches so far this season.

The Anthony Akhulia Bidco side won the epic game which was staged in Machakos County 5-3.

Eric Michibu opened the scoring for Bidco United in the 23rd minute before John Kelwish added the second a minute later. 

A quick brace from Chris Opondo and a late goal from Brian Mboya were enough to help Bidco United bag the maximum points. FC Talanta’s goals were scored by Brian Wafula, Alex Juma and Kevintom Machika.
