FKF unveil KBC as free to air broadcast partner in 191 million deal per year

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has officially unveiled the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) as its free to air broadcasting partner in a seven-year deal signed on Thursday afternoon at the Talanta Plaza Complex in Nairobi.

In the event graced by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Eliud Owalo, the country’s football governing body will receive $1,250,000 (approximately Ksh 191,623,931) per season from the state broadcaster to air two free games across the country every weekend.

The deal will also have an increment of $100,000 (Ksh 15,329,914) for the subsequent seasons.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa divulged that KBC will be giving them $750,000 (Ksh 114,974,359) for the television deal with the additional $500,000 (Ksh 76,649,572) being for the radio deal, making up the total $1,250,000 signed in the deal.

“The TV deal itself is $750,000 while the radio deal is $500,000. Those are the rights we have sold to KBC because we are doing a commercial deal with them and this amount will be per season.

The Ministry of Sports is not sponsoring FKF. The Ministry is involved because they are supporting KBC so that the state broadcaster can enhance its capacity to develop sports in the future,” Mwendwa said in the event.

According to the current FKF President, each of the 18 teams in the league is expected to get upto 10 million per season from the signed agreement.

The free to air deal with KBC comes after the Pay TV deal with Tanzanian media giants Azam that was signed on 31 August 2023. In that agreement, Azam TV cough up to KES 145 million per season for the seven-year contract signed.

The two deals are now believed to be giving FKF upto 336 million per season from broadcasting alone with Mwendwa revealing that the contract with Azam allowed FKF to get a free to air partner.

"Azam is our pay TV partner. The contract we signed with them allowed us to have free to air partners," he mentioned.

KBC will air a total of 68 matches, two every week, on its TV and radio platforms beginning from matchday 13 this weekend.
