Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s World Record broken in Germany as Moraa sets 600m leading time

Wanyonyi’s mile record, which was set in April, was broken by Great Britain's Elliot Giles.
- Elliot Giles set a new road mile record of 3:51.3.
- He broke the previous 3:54.6 mark set by Emmanuel Wanyonyi in April that was yet to be ratified.
- Mary Moraa also set a new 600m world record on Sunday.
Elliot Giles ran a brilliant race on Sunday 1 September 2024 to
set a new road mile world record at the KO Meile race in Germany.
The Great Britain runner clocked an impressive time of
3:51.3 to lower the 3:54.6 mark set by Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi on
April 27 in Herzogenaurach by more than three seconds.
Giles was closely followed by United States athlete Yared
Nuguse whose time of 3:51.9 was also faster than the former world record.
Kenya’s Vincent Keter settled for a third-place position in
the event organized by New Balance.

Giles' new world record will have to undergo the usual
ratification process before it becomes official.
Elsewhere, Mary Moraa produced a monstrous performance at
the ISTAF meeting in Berlin, to break Caster Semenya’s 600m world record.
The 24-year-old took off 0.14 seconds from the old world
record of 1:23.77 which was set by Semenya in the same event in 2017.
Moraa, who is popularly known as the “Dancing Queen”, took
to social media to express her gratitude for achieving the incredible feat.
“God is good. Just ran 600m world best (world record) of
1:21.63 here in Berlin, breaking the previous time of 1:21.77 held by South
Africa’s Caster Semenya from the same meet in 2017,” she wrote.
Vincentian runner Shafiqua Maloney crossed the finishing
line in 1:22.98 to overcome home girl Alicia Schmidt, who stopped the stopwatch
at 1:24.88.
Finally, Nelly Jepkosgei, who switched her allegiance from Kenya to Bahrain placed fourth ahead of Vivian Kiprotich.
