David Slays Goliath As Mt. Kenya Hand Mathare First SPL Defeat

NAIROBI, Kenya- SportPesa Premier League (SPL) leaders Mathare United FC surrendered their unbeaten start to the season as they were stunned 2-1 by bottom side Mt. Kenya United FC on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the first that Mt. Kenya have managed from the 11 games they have played this season and though the three points does not lift them from the bottom spot, it will do well to boost their morale going forward.

Francis Kimanzi’s charges started the game on the front foot and joint-SPL top scorer Cliff Nyakeya won a penalty in the 40th minute, which captain Chrispin Oduor converted to give them a 1-0 lead.

The slum boys however wouldn’t be taking the lead into the break as Peter Amani’s fantastic headed goal following a Moses Odhiambo cross, restored parity for the hosts.

It was surprisingly an evenly matched encounter and the second half provided an equal number of attempts on target for both sides.

Amani was the hero of the day for his side as he scored his second from the spot with three minutes of normal time left on the clock and Mt. Kenya did ever so well to hang on to the lead and see out the result.

At the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Tusker FC rose up to second on the SPL table besides playing out to a barren draw with Posta Rangers FC. 

The point was the first for Rangers in their last six outings and Robert Matano's side will be disappointed with the result, seeing that victory would cement their position despite the other weekend result.

Rangers remain in 17th place on the table with seven points, only one ahead of Mt. Kenya.
