Kenya’s 10,000m World Silver medalist Daniel Simiu Ebenyo is one of the six athletes who have been shortlisted for the World Athletics International Fair Play Award.

Ebenyo was nominated because of the unforgettable moment he created at the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships held in Latvia earlier this month, where he saluted his compatriot Sebastian Sawe who passed him on the finishing straight in the half marathon.

“In first place during the closing stages of the men’s half marathon at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Riga 23, Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo saluted his teammate Sebastian Sawe as Sawe overtook him for gold,” part of the statement from the governing body read.

Other runners who have been shortlisted for the prestigious award include Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, Sherrica Jackson, Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy and Jessica Warner-Judd.

Newly crowned Chicago Marathon winner Sifan Hassan and the reigning 100m world champion Sha’Carri Richardson of the United States are also in contention for the award.

Jackson and Richardson made it to the list thanks to the warm embrace they gave each other at the World Athletics Champions staged in Budapest, Hungary after winning a gold and silver medal respectively in the 200m event.

Former Kenyan 800m runner David Lekuta Rudisha was among the jury members who made the selection.
