The men’s national rugby 7s side, Shujaa, successfully defended their Safari 7s title after a clinical performance in the main cup final saw them beat Samurai 19-0 to claim the 2023 edition of the international tournament.

Having overcome a difficult Germany 19-5 earlier on in the semifinals, Shujaa just had just one more hurdle to overcome in a Samurai side that had booked their spot in the championship decider with a last-gasp 21-19 victory Uganda.

Quick thinking from the fast-rising Patrick Odongo saw Kenya take a 7-0 lead in the match after the youngster picked the ball from a Kenyan counter rack before unleashing his unstoppable pace as he touched down at the corner post.

Despite the difficult angle, Tony Omondi sliced the uprights to add the extra twos for the Kenyan side who had the narrow lead at the break.

Backed by the vociferous home fans, Kenya did not take too long to extend their lead as they struck within the first thirty seconds upon the second half’s resumption.

It all started when they forced an error from the second half restart before the ball was flown out wide right to Kevin Wekesa who easily ate up the space as he extended the team’s lead to 12-0 following an unsuccessful conversion.

Odongo would bag his brace in easy fashion after Kenya took advantage of their two-man advantage after electing to call for a scrum with an ill-disciplined Samurai reduced to five men.

That decision left Odongo with acres of space on the left which he gladly took as he touched down the team’s third and final try that sealed the 19-0 win.
