6 top sports events lined up for 2024 involving Kenyan athletes

2024 will be a year full of high-profile sporting activities for Kenyan athletes.

  • Kenyan athletic fans will get a chance to see some of the world’s best runners compete at the 2024 Kip Keino Classic.
  • There will also be the Safari Rally.
  • The highlight of the year will be the Olympic Games to be held in France between July and August.

The just ended year was one of the best in Kenya’s sporting industry with most of the national teams registering encouraging results and a number of athletes posting extraordinary performances.

2024 promises to be an even better year for the country owing to the huge list of major events ranging from the Olympic Games to the World Athletics Cross Country Championships. 

Here are the top six events that Kenyan sports persons will be taking part in this year.

Kip Keino Classic

Kenyan athletic fans will get a chance to see some of the world’s best runners compete at the 2024 Kip Keino Classic.

The fifth edition of the World Athletics Continental Tour event is slated to take place on Saturday, April 20 in Nairobi. 

Kip Keino Classic will be brought forward this year from its traditional May date because of the changes made on the Diamond League calendar. 

Previous events gave Kenyans a chance to witness the likes of reigning 100m world champion Sha’Carri Richardson and multiple champion Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce.

WRC Safari Rally Kenya

Similar to the Kip Keino Classic, there have also been changes in the 2024 World Rally Council (WRC) Safari Rally. 

The championship has been moved to its traditional Easter date and will now take place between Thursday, March 28 and Sunday, March 31.

Last year’s edition which started on Thursday, June 22 was won by French driver Sébastien Ogier. Elfyn Evans and Kalle Rovanperä, both from Toyota Gazoo Racing settled for second and third positions respectively. 

World Athletics Relays Championships

The Kenyan relay team led by African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omurwa Omanyala is expected to gauge themselves against other teams from different corners of the world in the World Athletics Relays Championships set to begin on Saturday, May 4, 2024 in Nassau, Bahamas. 

The championships which serves as the qualification route for the Paris Olympic Games is scheduled to end on Sunday, May 5.

Omanyala recently urged his teammates to prepare adequately so as to give themselves a better chance of posting excellent results.

Sirikwa Classic Cross Country

Local and international athletes are set to square it out at the annual Sirikwa Classic Cross Country.

The Gold standard meeting will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Lobo Village, located in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County. 

World Athletics Cross Country Championships

Kenyan speedsters are expected to grace the eagerly anticipated 2024 World Cross Country Championships scheduled for Saturday, March 30 in Belgrade, Serbia.

The event will take place at the Park of Friendship where the successful 2013 European Championships was held.

Paris Olympic Games

Finally, the biggest sporting event of 2024 is expected to go down between Friday, July 26 and Sunday, August 11 in Paris, France. 

Kenyans have high expectations going to the Olympic Games. Some of the Kenyan sports persons that are expected to shine at the games include Faith Kipyegon, Mary Moraa, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Eliud Kipchoge and Ferdinand Omanyala.
