SUMMARY
  • Nine matches will be on the cards on Wednesday.
  • Gor Mahia will be chasing their highest points finish since the 2018/19 season.
  • Muhoroni Youth, who are second from bottom, must defeat already-relegated Nzoia Sugar and hope for slipups elsewhere to avoid relegation.

The last time record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia crossed the 70-point mark in a league campaign was in the 2018/19 season where they managed 72 points.

Over the last three full seasons, the 21-time champions have managed 45, 58 and 70 points.

This season, the team has an opportunity to get to 76 points should they win their last two remaining matches.

It is those little records that head coach Johnathan McKinstry is using to motivate the already-crowned champions as they prepare to take on FC Talanta in the penultimate league clash set for Wednesday afternoon at the Machakos Stadium.

McKinstry, who will be departing the club at the end of the season for his new role as The Gambia’s national team head coach, disclosed that the team might have already won the bigger battle of securing the league title – his second in two years – but they still want to sweep the whole park.

“We are greedy here at Gor Mahia. Yes, we have won the league but there are a lot of records we want to set. The match against Sofapaka was our 22nd clean sheet of the season and I believe Kevin Omondi’s 20th, which goes level with our goalkeeping coach Boniface Oluoch for the record,” he said.

“We also have a couple of guys there fighting for the MVP award. Benson Omalla is also chasing the Golden Boot award so we do not just want the league title, but we also want to collect as many personal awards and records as possible.

Talanta will be our final home game of the season so come out in your numbers and cheer the team,” the coach added.

The game will also be another chance for Gor Mahia to extend their imperious form against FC Talanta whom they have never dropped points against in all the five encounters (W5).

Talanta on their part are not safe as they are only two points above the relegation places and will be desperate for points to maintain their stay in the topflight.

Elsewhere, there will be eight other matches across the league with particular focus being in the relegation zone.

Muhoroni Youth, who are second from bottom, must defeat already-relegated Nzoia Sugar to avoid relegation.

However, fate does not completely lie within their own hands as they could still be relegated if Shabana beats Bidco and Sofapaka triumphs over Nairobi City Stars.

The perfect scenario for Muhoroni Youth will be for Shabana and Sofapaka to slip up in order to maintain their slim hopes of staying in the top league alive ahead of Sunday's season finale.
