NAIROBI, Kenya- Africa Rally champion Manvir Baryan in a Skoda Octavia Fabia navigated by Briton Drew Sturrock will start first in the WRC Candidate Event Safari Rally 2019 between July 5 and 7 which has attracted 51 drivers with 25 among them foreigners after entries closed on Tuesday evening.

They will be followed off the ramp at Kasarani Stadium by five times Safari champion Carl Tundo and co-driver Tim Jessop in a Mitsubishi EVO X while former champions  Onkar Rai and Gareth Dawe in a Skoda fabia are seeded third.

Former Safari champion Baldev Chager and Ravi Soni in another Mitsubishi are fourth in another Mitsubishi EVO X.

The 1994 WRC Safari Rally champion Ian Duncan this time navigated by Anthony Nielsen are ranked fourth  in a Mitsubishi EVO X to complete the top tier drivers.

Zambians Leroy Gomes and Ursula Gomes lead the foreigners in a Ford Fiesta.  They will be followed by compatriots Jassy Singh and and Sahid Khan in a Subaru GRB.

Bidding to return to the World Rally Championships roster in 2020, observers from the FIA will be in Nairobi to ensure the standards required are met.

Entire route

So important is safety of drivers and spectators that the FIA has sent the 1983 WRC Safari Rally champion Michelle Mouton as the safety delegate and she will drive through the entire route at the beginning of every competitive stage.

The Safari will be flagged outside the President Entrance of Kasarani Stadium on July 5 from 11:00 am. Cars will then head to the Super Special Stage on a head to head competition of two drivers in the 4.5km stage.

They  will then head to Gatamaiyo Forest 12km stage via Thika Road through exit 14 into Kenyatta Road.

The cars will come off the Stage at Kinale Forest (Soko Mjinga) and use the main Nairobi/Nakuru Highway up to Naivasha Town before ending up at the at Sopa Lodge for an overnight say.

Day Two will start in Naivasha up to Soysambu where action will concentrate around Elmentaita.

On Sunday action returns to Kedong in Naivasha.
