England could not have started their Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup on a brighter note as they demolished Iran 6-2 in their opening game at the Khalifa International Stadium.

The Three Lions took charge of Group B with the emphatic win before USA and Wales take to the pitch later in the evening.

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka scored a brace at his first ever World Cup appearance to inspire Gareth Southgate's side who are seeking a second ever title.

Jude Bellingham got England off the mark with a soaring header from Luke Shaw's cross 10 minutes before the break and the game was wrapped up before half-time thanks to Saka's fine strike and Raheem Sterling's classy volley.

The teenager Bellingham has been in fine form for his German club Borussia Dortmund and made a great impression with an impressive display throughout the game.

In the 62nd minute, Saka completed his brace after showing some great skill to dance around the Iranian defense, putting the game out of reach for their opponents.

Iran were given a reason to smile in the 65th minute as Porto forward Mehdi Taremi scored a wonderful goal to bring their fans to their feet in the stadium.

The joy was short-lived as Marcus Rashford scored 49 seconds after coming onto the pitch to replace Saka, with a wonderful finish after great work from captain Harry Kane.

Rashford's goal was the third fastest goal scored by a substitute in the World Cup and his first ever at the international tournament.

Jack Grealish completed the rout for England with a goal in the 90th minute after superb work from yet another substitute in Callum Wilson.

Taremi also completed his brace from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game after being brought down in the box by Manchester City defender John Stones.

The morale-boosting win works well for England as their games are only tipped to get harder with games against USA and Wales still left to play.
