NAIROBI, Kenya- Kakamega
Homeboyz FC shot to the top of the 2019/20 Kenya Premier League (KPL) table for
the first time after an impressive 2-1 comeback win against Kariobangi Sharks
FC on Saturday afternoon.
Homeboyz now lead the standings with 39 points, two ahead of
Tusker FC who could retain the top spot if they are victorious against Ulinzi
Stars FC on Sunday at the Ruaraka Stadium.
Boniface Onyango handed Sharks a surprise lead in the 22nd minute,
a lead they hang on to until the break but Homeboyz came back with a different
agenda for the second half.
Kevin Omondi pulled one back in the 58th minute and a late
Ali Bhai goal nine minutes from time sealed all three points for the visitors.
The defeat, a second consecutive one for William Muluya’s
charges, leaves Sharks languishing in 13th place with 13 points from 18
matches.
Following closely are record KPL winners Gor Mahia FC in second
place with 38 points after a resounding 3-0 hammering of Bandari FC.
In an unfamiliar turn of events, goalkeeper David Mapigano
got his name on the scoresheet in the ninth minute as his launch forward caught
his opposite number Justin Ndikumana off-guard and bounced over him into the
back of the net.
New signing Michael Apudo and former Western Stima FC
forward Kennedy ‘Agogo’ Otieno both scored in the second half to seal a league
double over the troubled dockers.
Bandari, who are now under the temporary charge of Twahir
Muhiddin, have now lost three games in a row and remain in 11th place with a
lowly 18 points.
Resurgent Kenya Commercial Bank FC (KCB) stretched their
unbeaten streak to eight games with a convincing 3-1 victory over Western Stima
FC at the Kenyatta Stadium.
Club top scorer Enock Agwanda, Reagan Otieno and Simon
Munala scored for KCB in the first half, while the visitors' consolation was
netted by Villa Oromchan from the spot in the second half.
The win keeps the bankers on course to challenge for the
league title as they jumped into fourth place with 35 points, just four off the
top and still with a game in hand.
Stima on the other hand dropped to seventh after suffering back-to-back
losses for the first time this season.
In the first game played at the Kenyatta Stadium, it was yet
another gloomy day for returning Wazito FC as they were humiliated 3-0 by Posta
Rangers FC.
Wazito coach Stewart Hall opted to start former AFC Leopards
SC talisman Whyvonne Isuza and Dennis Ng’ang’a, but their inclusion failed to
pay off as it was a dismal show from the hosts.
A Joseph Mbugi brace and a late effort from former KCB
forward Clinton Kisiavuki was enough for Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo’s team as they
made it three consecutive league wins.
The win lifts the mail carriers to eighth place with 28
points, a whopping 17 ahead of their opponents who have now lost an embarrassing
seven games in a row.
At the Moi Stadium in Kisumu, AFC Leopards SC made light
work of Kisumu All Stars FC with a comfortable 2-0 win.
Vincent Oburu opened the scoring in the first half and the
league’s top scorer John Mark Makwatta bagged his 13th of the campaign in the 74th
minute to move his side up to sixth on the log.
Basement side Chemelil Sugar FC picked up an important point
as they held Sofapaka to a 1-1 draw and Nzoia Sugar FC and Zoo FC played out to
the only barren draw of the day.
