1500m world record holder Faith Kipyegon is finally expected to compete for the first time this year at the Eugene Diamond League also known as the Prefontaine Classic.

“Faith Kipyegon will take on the 5000m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on May 25th, almost a year after she broke the world record over the distance at the Wanda Diamond League in Paris last season,” the statement read in part.

The multiple world champion will be seeking to reclaim her 5000m world record in Eugene, the same venue where she lost it to her Ethiopian rival Gudaf Tsegay.

Tsegay ran a sensational race at the event last year, crossing the finishing line in 14:00.21 and in the process broke Kipyegon’s former world record of 14:05.20.

Moreover, the latter will use the Prefontaine Classic to gauge herself ahead of the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which is set to kick off on July 26.

In Eugene, the 23-year-old is expected to face stiff competition from the likes of United States’ runner Athing Mu.

Other Kenyans who will race in Eugene include 3000m steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, Jackline Chepkoech, Reynold Kipkorir, Abel Kipsang, and Timothy Cheruiyot.
