Wanyama’s Montreal stun Messi’s Inter Miami as Olunga bags ninth goal of the season

CF Montreal, home to former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, had the perfect weekend as they picked up a stunning victory over Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in a Monday morning Major League Soccer (MLS) match.
Played at the Chase Stadium in Florida, Montreal recorded a 2-3 victory against the star-studded team that also has the likes of Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba within their ranks.
World Cup winner Messi was not featured in the game as he was rested given that he suffered a shin injury. However, before the loss, the 36-year-old Argentine star had played all four Inter Miami games so far this season.

Fernando Alvarez opened the scoring for Montreal in the 13th minute but Leonardo Campana restored parity in the 71st minute.
That stalemate however did not suffice for long as Matias Coccaro scored four minutes later to hand Montreal the lead once again. Ibrahim Sunusi then put the game beyond Miami’s reach with the third goal three minutes later.
Alba pulled one back with ten minutes left to go but it was too little too late as Montreal held on for the win that maintained their unbeaten run this season (W2 D1) as they moved joint top alongside Miami on 7 points despite playing a game less.

Elsewhere, Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga returned to his goalscoring form for Al Duhail as he found the back of the net for his ninth strike of the season.
However, the Sunday clash ended in a 2-1 defeat to Al Wakrah in the Qatar Stars League. Following Olunga’s opener in the 25th minute, Al Wakrah restored parity in the 62nd minute through Khaled Ali before popping up with the winner in stoppage time through Benyettou.
The loss sees Duhail drop to sixth on the table with 19 points after 16 games. Olunga who was substituted in the 78th minute, is optimistic that his side will regain its winning form.
Elsewhere, Harambee Stars defender Daniel Anyembe also continued with his fine form after returning from injury.

Anyembe was featured in Viborg’s 1-2 loss to Brondby in the Danish Super Liga. He was introduced in the 69th minute for Kuzmic but failed to help his team secure a win.
Richard Odada on the other hand played for 57 minutes as his side AaB consolidated their top spot in the Danish second tie with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Vendsyssel.
The talented left-back Eric Ouma popularly known as Marcelo cemented his spot in Rakow as he played for the whole 90 minutes. Rakow was however held to a 1-1 draw by Puszcza in the Polish top flight.
Other Kenyans who featured for their teams include Clarke Oduor and Vincent Harper. Odour was part of the Bradford City side that beat Accrington 3-0 while Harper helped Exeter City manage a 2-2 draw against Bolton in EFL League One. Both matches were played on Saturday.
Harambee Stars winger Ayub Timbe was part of the Sabail team that went 0-1 down to Sumqayit in the Azerbaijan topflight. Sabail now stands fifth in the Azerbaijan Premier League with 37 points.
