NAKURU, Kenya- Rwanda international Jacques Tuyisenge scored a brace as SportPesa Premier League (SPL) champions Gor Mahia FC beat Sony Sugar FC 2-0 at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru on Wednesday afternoon to become the first player to score over 40 goals for the club since the legendary Peter Dawo. 

Tuyisenge struck his 40th and 41st goals of his Gor career to gift the champions the much-needed victory that saw them jump up to fourth on the league table on 16 points, eight adrift pacesetters Mathare United FC with a game in hand.

The Rwanda international sunk his brace in the 12th and 80th minutes of the contest as Gor recovered from crashing out of the 2019 SportPesa Cup in Tanzania and defeat to KCB FC in the SPL last weekend.

Victory will give head coach Hassan Oktay breathing space as he prepares the record 18-time domestic league winners for their Titanic CAF Confederations Cup Group D opener against Cairo giants Zamalek of Egypt at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday.

In his first season with Gor, Dawo helped the club to win the domestic league and cup double. He also led the side to its first and only African Cup Winners' Cup title in 1987, scoring 10 goals in the competition.

Following the exploits, Dawo finished seventh in the voting for 1987 African Footballer of the Year.
