Malkia Strikers lead the way as Kenyan teams dismantle opponents in African Games

Kenyan teams continued with their excellent form at the ongoing 2024 African Games being held in Accra, Ghana by whitewashing their rivals in various disciplines.

The women’s national volleyball team, commonly known as Malkia Strikers, hammered Nigeria by straight sets to win their second match in a row.

The multiple African champions won the game 25-21, 25-18 and 25-12 to increase their chances of proceeding to the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the dominant display, Malkia Strikers head coach Japheth Munala divulged how they plan to retain the continental title.

“I am happy that we played according to our system. The system worked very well and that made us to win very easily the three sets. We are hopeful that if we continue playing like this then we are going to take the trophy back home.

Nigeria is a good team. We are intending to be number one in our pool so that we can get number four on the other side for the quarter-final then qualify for the semis and then the finals,” he stated.

On his part, Nigeria’s manager Samuel Ajayi acknowledged that Kenya were the better side than his charges.

“I am not happy that we lost. Kenya is not a small team in Africa we all know. They are Olympians and they have been the African champions for more than three times. They are the defending champions as far as this African Games is concerned.

So, I believe they have a better team and they are more organized and experienced. We lost to a better team,” he commented.

Elsewhere, the Kenyan men’s volleyball team overcame hosts Ghana in a similar fashion to win their second consecutive match at the 13th edition of the tournament.

Wafalme won the first set 25-21 before triumphing in the second set and third set with a scoreline of 25-21 and 25-14 respectively.

In handball, the Kenyan men’s team also had a good day, edging past Ghana with a 27-22 scoreline in a hotly contested clash.

Finally, in boxing, Martha Faki defeated Ghana’s Sarah Apew by a unanimous decision in the women’s bantamweight category.
