Harambee Stars midfielder completes move to Romanian top-flight side

The Kenyan player joins his new club after a season in Thailand.

Kenyan international Eric Johana Omondi has completed a move to Romanian top tier side UTA Arad FC.

According to an official social media post by the club, the former Mathare United player who has been clubless since May completed the move and signed a two-year contract.

“Eric Johana Omondi arrived in Arad today and will join the team led by Mircea Rednic. He put together 36 selections for Kenya’s senior national team for which he scored six goals.

Omondi will wear the number 24 shirt for the next two seasons. Let's welcome him," an official post from the club read.

Omondi has previously had several stints in Europe. He made his first move to Sweden where he played for Vasalunds IF.

The 29-year-old then moved to Brommapojkarna in 2018 before landing a deal with Jönköpings Södra IF two years later. At Jönköpings Södra IF and IF Brommapojkarna, Omondi scored 14 and six goals respectively.

The pacey forward later had a brief spell at Belgian side Sportkring Beveren, making only four appearances before moving to Thailand in 2022. 

During the 2022/2023 Thai League season, Omondi was influential for Muangthong United Football Club, scoring 10 goals in 28 appearances with his last appearance coming back in May.

Omondi made his national team debut against neighbors Ethiopia in 2015. His goals were crucial for Harambee Stars with the first one coming against Congo during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In 2015, Omondi was named the Kenya Premier League (KPL) midfielder of the year thanks to his breath-taking performances.

Omondi’s move comes at a time Harambee Stars are preparing to take part in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the recent announcement of the country hosting the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

Currently, Arad are in third last place in the log after managing only 10 points from the opening eleven matches with Steaua Bucuresti stting at the top of the table on 29 points.
