Financial breakdown of the 16.5 million SportPesa 7s sponsorship package

On Monday 22 July, leading online gaming firm SportPesa affirmed its commitment to uplifting the sporting ecosystem in the country after announcing a 16.5 million sponsorship deal for the 2024 National Rugby Sevens Circuit.

Following a largely successful outing in 2023, the deal will see SportPesa assuming the title rights for the circuit that will be officially referred to as the SportPesa 7s for a second year running.

With six tournaments set to take place in five cities over two months, here is the financial breakdown of how the 16.5 million will be utilized.

Financial Breakdown

Kenya Rugby Union – The country’s rugby governing body will receive 6.5 million from the total sponsorship to help with operational costs of the entire tournament.

Host clubs – Each of the six different hosts will receive 1 million to cater for the organization of their respective tournaments, leading to a total of 6 million.

Marketing – 1.8 million of the sponsorship will go towards marketing and the tournament’s promotional activities.

Prize money

Prize money – A total of 2.2 million will go back to teams that emerge as winners in the different tournaments and the overall circuit.

What each team will get per leg (Applies to all the six legs for men)

Men (Division 1)

Winners – 100,000

2nd place – 50,000

3rd place – 25,000

Men (Division 2)

Winners – 50,000

Women ( 3 legs that will have women's tournaments)

Winners – 70,000

Runner up – 30,000

Overall Prize Money

Overall winners – 300,000

2nd place – 150,000

Kicking off the 2024 SportPesa 7s is the 57th edition of the Christie 7s scheduled for 27/28 July at the RFUEA Grounds on Ngong Road, Nairobi.

Christie 7s will lay ground for the KRU 7s set for the 3/4 of August at the ASK Kakamega Showground in Kakamega County.

KRU 7s highlights a major addition made to the circuit this year, acting as a replacement for the Tisap 7s discontinued last year.

The third leg will shift to Kisumu County for Dala 7s which takes centre-stage on 17/18 August before the Kabeberi 7s winds up the month on 24/25 August.

Mombasa County will welcome the fifth leg with the Driftwood 7s scheduled for 7/8 September.

That penultimate leg will then usher in Nakuru’s Prinsloo 7s on 14/15 September, the sixth and final leg of the SportPesa National 7s Circuit 2024.
