NAIROBI, Kenya- The Boxing Day round of English Premier League (EPL) matches brought with it yet another landmark occasion for nine-time league winners Everton FC as they became the first English club to reach 7000 top-flight goals.

Everton returned to winning ways in scintillating style against Burnley FC as they hammered the hosts 5-1, recording their biggest away league victory for 33 years.

The 5-1 triumph at Turf Moor was also only the second time the Blues have triumphed by four clear goals on the road in the Premier League era.

Colombian defender Yerry Mina rose to head the Blues into the lead for the clubs’ 7000th goal, before a riveting Lucas Digne free-kick doubled their advantage.

Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson then scored from the penalty spot to give the Toffees an unassailable 3-0 half-time lead.

“We started really well, whether it was due to our preparations for the game or the players mentality, it worked well for us today,” Everton coach Marco Silva stated.

Historic moment

Former FC Barcelona left-back, Digne, was not done as he scored with yet another sensational long-range strike midway through the second half to break his own personal goal-scoring record in a season of top flight football.

“We needed to react and we did so very well. We had a lot to prove following last week’s loss to Tottenham and I believe we all pulled our weight,” Digne stated.

“This was a very important win for us and for the fans as well, a truly historic moment for the club,” he added.

Brazilian substitute Richarlison then beat Joe Hart with the outside of his boot in stoppage time to clinch a richly-merited 5-1 victory.

The win leaves Everton in eighth place on the EPL table with 28 points from 19 games and now prepare for an away fixture at Brighton and Hove Albion FC on December 29, before a home game against Leicester City FC on the first day of 2019.
