AFC Leopards collect over 2.8 million from Mashemeji Derby clash

The 12-time Kenyan champions sold a total of 12,712 tickets.

AFC Leopards announced on Monday, October 9, 2023 that they reaped big during the Mashemeji Derby.

According to an update issued by the club, over Ksh 2,800,000 was collected during the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) clash against Gor Mahia.

“We hosted Gor Mahia FC on Saturday at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. A total of 12172 tickets were sold for the match. We collected a total of Ksh 2,838,300,” part of the statement from Ingwe read.

The multiple league champions managed to sell 666 VIP, 60 VVIP and 1561 terrace A tickets. In addition, 9885 fans bought terrace B tickets during the flash sale. 

The struggling club, which currently sits in the relegation zone, ended by thanking their fans for turning out in large numbers to cheer them. 

However, despite the support, Ingwe ended up disappointing their fans in the derby, allowing rivals Gor Mahia to win the match 2-0.

The goals were scored by FKFPL top scorer Benson Omalla in each half of the entertaining match with former AFC Leopards midfielder Austin Odhiambo and Rwandan international Patrick Sibomana providing the assists.

The announcement from the club regarding the amount of money gathered has led to diverse reactions from its fan base.

Robert Ouko Obusebwa opined that the club is capable of collecting Ksh 2,500,000 if it starts to post excellent results.

“Just give these crowds something to cheer up for. Ingwe has the potential of making up to 2.5M worth of gate collections every weekend. Imagine all that boost!” commented Obusebwa.

Another fan revealed that he always buys extra tickets to support the club that his close to his heart.

“As a proud football fan, I always purchase five tickets just to support the club. Your online platform gives us that chance,” ended Andericus Omusi. 

Others thanked the management for being transparent about Ingwe affairs and urged them to continue with the same spirit. 

Since the introduction of online ticketing, AFC Leopards have managed to collect Ksh 4,264,600 in gate charges. 

The club is scheduled to square it out with Bandari in their next league match on Sunday, October 22.
