Southampton star midfielder Victor Wanyama has revealed Arsenal are interested in signing him this summer after confirming talks with Arsene Wenger.
The 23-year-old joined the South Coast club from Celtic in 2013 and since making a switch to St Mary’s Stadium, he has been instrumental alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in their midfield.
Wanyama is a tough tackling midfielder and has scored three goals and managed one assist in 28 league appearances this season. The Kenyan international has admitted that he is on the Gunners’ summer wishlist after revealing Arsenal’s interest.
“Wenger has been talking about me. He has let it be known he would like to sign me this summer,”Wanyama told The Sun.
Southampton are seventh in the league table with 56 points from 33 games and are eight points behind fourth place Manchester City. It will be difficult for Ronald Koeman’s side to qualify for the Europe’s elite club competition.
Wanyama has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League and has opened the door for a summer move to the Emirates. The midfielder also claims a decision over his future will be taken at the end of this season.
“Arsenal are a great club and I’d love to play Champions League football as I loved being on that stage with Celtic,” the Southampton star said.
“But we’ve had a fantastic season at Saints and I want to stay focused on helping the club qualify for Europe. Then we’ll see where I end up in the summer,” Wanyama added.
The African midfielder’s contract with his current employers runs down in 2017 and his latest comments suggest that he is looking for a move away from Southampton in the summer. The Sun claims Wanyama is valued at around £20m ($30m) and it should be seen whether Wenger will match the Saints’ asking price.
Arsenal have the services of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta in the holding midfield role, while Francis Coquelin has come good in recent times for the north London club. Flamini’s contract will expire at the end of the season and the former Everton man is in the twilight of his career. A move for Wanyama could see him replace Flamini in the Gunners’ squad for the next season.
