NAIROBI, Kenya- Ushuru FC coach, Ken Kenyatta, is confident they will redeem themselves and gain promotion to the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) by beating Thika United FC in their two-legged playoff on Wednesday and Sunday.
The taxmen blew a one point lead heading into the last round of the National Super League (NSL) to lose 0-1 to Vihiga United FC in a defeat that saw them miss out on the top two automatic SPL promotion places by falling back to third on 78 points.
Wazito FC who blanked Police FC 5-2 leapfrogged them to second on 80, behind NSL champions Vihiga on goal difference.
With Thika finishing 16th in the 2017 SPL, the stage was set for a historic promotion play-off and Kenyatta believes this is their defining moment after stumbling on the last day of the NSL.
“We have come down to the two most important matches of our season. We need to play better than Thika if we want to realize our dream of playing in the SPL,” said Kenyatta.
The odds are against Ushuru given that they have only beaten Thika once in six previous encounters between the two sides; a 2-1 win back in 2014.
However Kenyatta is certain that history will not count on Wednesday as he seeks to gain a first leg advantage.
“This is a lifeline we have been handed. The chances for us are 50-50 but there is a lot at stake. We have to fight for it,” he added.
Ushuru’s top scorer Benson Amianda, who netted 16 goals in the second tier, will hope to carry his scoring form into this match but will face a tough test in Thika’s custodian Allan Owiny who only conceded three goals in the last five SPL matches.
