Tusker captain Jesse Were says golden boot is not his priority.
Were, who missed out on the 2013 golden boot award after scoring 15 goal before finishing as joint-third highest scorer with nine goals last season, has so far netted seven goals same as 2013 golden boot winner Jacob Keli (AFC Leopards) and Gor Mahia’s Ali Abondo.
But speaking after inspiring the Brewers to a 1-1 draw with his former side Mathare United on Wednesday, the 25 years old striker said his aim is to help the second placed Tusker win their eleventh league title.
“At the moment, golden boot is not my priority, my target is to help my team win as many games as possible and reclaim the title,” said Were.
“My job is to score goals and that is exactly what I am doing, but as a team our target is to win the league.”
However, Were admitted that wearing the arm-band has motivated him to perform better.
“Getting the captaincy is not only a motivation for me, but the whole team. It has really given me more energy and confidence to push the team,” he said.
