NAIROBI, Kenya – The tense political climate in the country has forced the cancellation of SportPesa Premier League (SPL) round of 21 matches scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
This is the second time the local top flight games have been cancelled due to the General Elections following the shelving of the weekend round of 20 fixtures.
The development will leave organisers scrambling to clear the backlog of fixtures with the league delayed at the start of the season due to the 18 vs 16 team dispute.
“This decision has been made in light of the political situation of the country at the moment that has made it difficult for players and technical staff to report back to their clubs for the purpose of engaging in meaningful training and preparation to honour the matches,” read a statement signed by SPL CEO Jack Oguda.
“Round 20 matches which had been rescheduled to the weekend of 19-20 August will, however, go on as planned and we urge clubs to make use of this week to prepare for those matches as the situation continues to be monitored.
“The round 21 matches will be scheduled to new dates which will be communicated tomorrow, Monday 14 August, 2017,” Oguda added.
