Sony Sugar FC plays host to Sofapaka at the Awendo Green Stadium starting 1500hrs; the two teams’ aims going into the game are well clear – Sofapaka are title contenders and badly want a win that could take them top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) log while ninth placed Sony Sugar can only go for a top half finish.
Awendo Green Stadium is more of a fortress to Sony Sugar going by the points they usually pick at home bur when it comes to playing Sofapaka at the venue, it is a different issue altogether as the 2009 KPL champions have never lost to Sony at the venue.
Going to the game, Sofapaka will be the favorites, with the dominance over Sony Sugar in the past few meetings as well as their recent form in the league. In the past 11 meetings pitting the two sides, Sofapaka has managed six wins while Sony has won two with three ending in draws.
Sofapaka has not lost any of their last five matches, in fact, they have won each of the last four with 1 – 0 margins and heading to the game, they will wish to extend the run to five straight wins.
Sony Sugar on their part, have managed just one win in their last five matches – the 1 – 0 win over KRA in their last outing. That came on the back of two losses and two draws but they will be looking to thrash the form book in order to rise to the top half at the expense of their opponents’ title ambitions.
The Millers were not in action in the GOtv Shield last weekend, so unlike their opponents, they are well rested and with no fresh injuries reported but will be looking to do better than their 0 – 2 loss to Shabana in a Thursday 2 October friendly match. First choice keeper Lucas Indeche is expected to return to the starting team after Ronny Kagunzi was preferred in the last match.
Heading to the game, Sofapaka will have a number of players return after missing the GOtv Shield game against Administration Police, key among them being Partick Kagogo who has a prolific goal scoring ratio against Sony Sugar and utility man Shafik Batambuze as well as Thomas Wanyama.
A win for Sony Sugar, who are on 32 points going into the game, may see them rise from ninth to sixth place on the log but that will depend on other results – they will hope that Thika United, Mathare United and KRA all drop points.
A win for Sofapaka, who are on 46 points, will see them hit the summit if Gor Mahia drops points in the game against Nairobi City Stars on Saturday.
